In Figure 10-1, the PIX application calls the Web service stubs method, which in turn creates the request SOAP message. Since the PIX application integrates with XFire via Spring, you can inject the XFire-generated stub as a normal Spring bean dependency. The code to make this injection is shown later in a Try It Out section of this chapter. Once the stub code has created the SOAP-based Web service request, it sends the request over a network using the HTTP protocol. The e-mail validation service in this scenario is implemented using .NET server technology. The request arrives at this server. The .NET server receives the request and converts the SOAP request into the required format accepted by the service implementation. The .NET-based Web service implementation executes the business logic; in this case the service validates the e-mail address by examining its syntax. The Web service then creates a SOAP-based response message and sends it back to the consumer over the network. Next, the PIX Web service consumer receives the response message from the method invocation through the stub code. The response message is converted back from SOAP response to Java return values by the XFire-generated code. This is the sequence of events during every Web service invocation. The next section looks at the actual coding of the e-mail validation Web service consumer in PIX, using XFire to generate the required stub code.
